I was given a 94 Corolla, 116230 miles. Front end makes grinding/rattling noise over 10mph. Upon inspection, raised, when I grab the right frt tire at the top and bottom, there is excessive play back and forth. Wiggles like a loose tooth. When I repeat the test on the left side, no back and forth motion. I checked the nut holding the bearings in place, nothing unusual. doesn't make any noise in reverse. Previously owned by older couple, just used to drive to work, etc. Is this the drive shaft going bad . . . or perhaps a bad hub bearing??? Thanks. Larry

Upon inspection, raised, when I grab the right frt tire at the top and bottom, there is excessive play back and forth. Wiggles like a loose tooth.Sounds like bad wheel bearing. I was always told if you have play at 12 & 6 oclock it is normally the wheel bearing. And 9 & 3 is possible tie rod, etc...
When I repeat the test on the left side, no back and forth motion.Could be the bearing again, maybe locked up? Remove the nut, maybe you will be able to see the bearing & tell if in fact that is the problem. Also could be the breaks locked up.
I have had several Corolla's and caddyman is right they are bad about stuts & mounts going out.

Ball joint is very probable also. If no play side to side then probably not a bearing since you usually feel them at all positions.

My money is still on struts/mounts/sway bar link pins.

Thanks for the advise. I have to suspect a bad hub bearing at this point since one side has so much more play at 12 and 6 then the other tire. My sincere thanks, this good advise I have received from this site has saved me hundreds of dollars in the past.
