2006 Nextel Cup !
DAYTONA 500 - SEASON OPENER - Feb. 12, 2006
Jimmie Johnson (48-Chevy) won a two-lap shootout Sunday to claim the victory, capping a roller-coaster week that saw NASCAR kick his crew chief out of competition for cheating.
Johnson stayed calm and avoided trouble in a wild race that saw Tony Stewart (20-Chevy) eliminate three contenders: Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth and himself.
Rocketman Ryan Newman finished 3rd, Stewart 5th, Dale Earnhardt Jr. 6th, and Jeff Gordon 25th!

week 2 - Auto Club 500
FONTANA, Calif. -- Even when he took the lead late in the Nextel Cup race at California Speedway, Matt Kenseth didn't expect to win.
But the 2003 Cup champion got a gift Sunday, winning the Auto Club 500 after the stronger cars of Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart went to the garage with late-race engine failures.

week 3 - UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400
UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400
LAS VEGAS -- It took Jimmie Johnson 270 laps to get to the front Sunday, but that was soon enough.
Johnson took advantage of a late-race caution flag Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, catching and passing Matt Kenseth in a two-lap overtime sprint to the finish in the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400.
Johnson's No. 48 Chevrolet surged past Kenseth's No. 17 Ford on the outside after the two sped side-by-side through the third and fourth turns on the 1.5-mile oval for the final time. The winner crossed by finish line 0.115 seconds -- about half a car-length -- ahead as he led a lap for the only time in the 271-lap event.

Golden Corral 500
Golden Corral 500
HAMPTON, Ga. -- Kasey Kahne showed early signs of being a championship contender by winning at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Monday while Bill Lester finished way back in becoming the first black driver to race in NASCAR's top series since 1986.
The top Cup rookie in 2004, Kahne slumped last year. But he's started this season with four strong performances, including an 11th-place run at Daytona and two fourth-place finishes before earning the second victory of his career.

week 5 - Food City 500
Food City 500
Kurt Busch's friend and former teammate was in his way. So Busch banged Matt Kenseth aside -- the first of two hard shoves Kenseth received -- to win yet another race at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Opinions differed after if Busch's brash bump with four laps to go Sunday in the Food City 500 was out of line.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Tony Stewart won a paint-trading duel with Jimmie Johnson and overcame Hendrick Motorsports' long domination at Martinsville Speedway.
Stewart and Johnson dueled nose-to-bumper and side-by-side for four laps Sunday, bringing the 65,000 fans to their feet. After being rebuffed three times, Stewart finally got around Johnson with 27 laps to go and held on to win the DirectTV 500.

A close championship race
HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) -- At this point, Tony Stewart is racing only for pride and wins. On Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, he stole the spotlight from the title contenders with a victory that clearly made him proud.
Stewart, who failed to qualify for the 10-race Chase for Nextel Cup after winning his second Nextel Cup title last season, held off Jimmie Johnson for his fourth victory of the season and second in the first seven races of the 2006 playoffs.
Beyond that... here's where the chasers stand right now"
